'Flood control measures in place'

Imphal, May 12 2012:
With the state experiencing flood problems every year during monsoons, the state government has taken up strategic measures to fight and control recurring floods along with identification of sensitive river banks which normally cave in the event of any flood, IFCD Minister Ngamthang Haokip has informed.
He was speaking on the occasion of a 'Thanks Giving Programme' held at Gamnom Sapermeina Community Hall, in his honour.
Minister Ngamthang Haokip further stated that a number of development programmes both in the hills and the plains have been taken up in the state under the initiative of Chief Minister O Ibobi.
Further development programmes would also be taken up.
As a precautionary measure to face any natural calamities like floods in the state, the IFCD has kept intact all the required equipments in the godown, the Minister informed, adding that he had inspected and identified all river banks which normally get eroded along with MLAs concerned.
Minister Ngamthang pointed out that the culvert at Shamushang which is meant to drain out water from Lamphelpat is also under construction.
Funds from NLCPR and NABARD would also be sought...
for the purpose of preventing the problem of recurring floods in the state.
On the occasion, Congress workers from polling station nos.56/31 Khunkhu Kuki, 51/16 G Monglung and 51/03 Mayangkhang (B) of Saitu A/C were given incentive awards for the highest number of votes cast in favour of Congress candidates, as promised earlier.
The function was also attended by Rose Mangsi, President of Kuki Women's Union, Manipur, Premananda and Nilbir, conveners of North East People Organisation.
