Govt fails to produce Irom Sharmila in court

Government of Manipur on Tuesday failed to produce Anti-AFSPA campaigner Irom Sharmila before the Metropolitan Magistrate, Patiala House Court, New Delhi.
Sharmila had to be produced in the court to record her statement in connection with a pending case over her fast at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi.
Sharmila has been on fast over 15 years demanding repeal of Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act.
She continued her fast at Jantar Mantar in 2006 during which Delhi Police charged her under section 309 IPC (attempt to commit suicide) .
Since no official communication had been received from Jail Superintendent regarding non-production of the accused on Tuesday and the matter has been fixed for recording of statement of accused Irom Sharmila on August 12, an order issued by the court said.
It said one letter dated 09.06.2015 is received from Superintendent, Manipur Jail which showed that the superintendent had written to Additional Director General of Police (Prisons) for making necessary arrangements for production of Irom Sharmila before the court.
However, the accused was not produced and no communication whatsoever was sent regarding non-production of accused.
Sharmila's counsel and persons who are attending the accused have informed him that no arrangement of any sort has been made for producing the accused before the court on August 11 and 12.Counsel for accused further prayed that the present matter need not be listed for August 12 but may be fixed for October 6 and 7.However, no official communication has been received from Jail Superintendent concerned regarding non-production of the accused and declined the request of the counsel.
As such, the matter has been re-notified for August 12, the order said.
