Imphal, October 10 2019:
Women Action for Development (WAD) has urged the State Government to implement appropriate mechanisms to prevent the ever increasing crimes committed against women in the State.
Addressing a press meet held at its Konung Mamang office today, WAD member MK Saroj Khan said that the organization strongly condemns both the incident of the alleged rape of a minor girl by an EGC technician at RIMS on the wee hours of October 2 and the mob violence and humiliation upon a man, a woman and her 12 year old daughter at Upokpi Khunou in Bishnupur district on October 6.Further stating that the level of crimes committed against women in the State has remain at an all time high even though many women organizations and womenfolk of the State have been decrying and fighting against such incidents, he demanded the State Government to bring out an appropriate mechanism to prevent crimes against women.
Pointing out that the alleged rape of the minor girl by the RIMS technician was committed inside the hospital's ECG room in the absence of any female technician and staff, he asked the hospital authority how the female victim was allowed to be taken inside the ECG room without the presence of any female technician or staff.
He then urged the State Government and every hospital authority to engage female staff while treating female patients.
Informing that a fact finding team of WAD had visited at Upokpi Khunou and Kha-Potshangbam on October 8, Saroj Khan went on to convey that the team received information that the victim woman and the man were harassed and assaulted by some women on the charge of having illicit rela-tionship/ immoral acts since the past many years although they were not caught red-handed.
He also decried that the minor daughter was publicly inquired by some locals on the evening of October 8, instead of providing extra care and counselling to her.
The WAD member also urged the State Government to rescue the minor victim and to keep the child at a safe place with proper care and protection besides providing counselling by a child psychiatrist.
While lauding Bishnupur police for their timely intervention, Saroj Khan appealed the police and State Government to expedite the process of framing charge sheet and award befitting punishment to all the culprits involved in the mob-violence incident to ensure that such incident are not repeated in the future.
He further appealed the general public to lodge formal complaints to police stations concerned instead of handling the law themselves and uploading videos or photos which could harm the modesty of a person.
