Ukhrul, August 10 2024:
Tangkhul Naga Zingsho Long (TNZL) has reacted strongly to the public travel advisory issued by Rang Peter Deputy Commissioner, Kamjong on areas in and around Indo-Myanmar border falling under the district.
Speaking to this correspondent, TNZL chairman AS Nathan said it is understandable that the notice emphasized on the prevailing unfavourable situation and the frequent occurrence of landmine explosions and its serious concerns and advised locals not to venture out or stroll around border areas for safety reasons.
However, it is the duty of the District Administration to ensure safety of the people from any threats by implementing comprehensive security measures, including the clearance of landmines, rather than restricting movement, which violates their fundamental rights, he asserted.
As many villages are situated along the border, restricting their movement effectively confines them within their village compound.
Restricting the movement of citizens should not be the primary response, rather proactive measures should be taken to mitigate these threats effectively, he added.
This move places the community under house arrest, depriving them of their fundamental rights and the ability to sustain their livelihood as they are engaged in agricultural work and collecting forest products, he reasoned.
He said that the unrest in Myanmar has led to a significant influx of immigrants from Choro to Kachouphung village, which is about 100 km in length, bordering Myanmar.
The present Government has failed to resolve the issue of immigration influx, which is creating a law and order problem and instead, has imposed restrictive measures that hinder the movement of its citizens.
"The safety of the residents is paramount, but it should not come at the cost of their basic rights and means of subsistence" he declared.
