Truck hijacked, father-son duo abducted

Imphal, December 09 2011:
Suspected armed cadres of NSCN (IM) have reportedly hijacked an Imphal-bound truck carrying cooking oil from Dimapur last night.
The truck has been hijacked from near the Last gate of Dimapur at around 8 pm yesterday for not allegedly complying with the demand for payment of road and good taxes.
On the other hand, in connection with monetary demand served to the Public Health Engineering Department, Chowkidar of the Water Supply Scheme, Irilbung identified as Soram Ibomcha (50) and his son, Geetchandra alias Yaipu (22) have been reportedly abducted by some unidentified armed persons from their quarters at around 9.30 pm of December 7 .
Decrying the abduction and demanding immediate release of the abducted father-son duo, local residents staged a protest demonstration near Irilbung bridge today.
The Water Supply site is under the control of an executive engineer and a few months back a militant group had served a demand letter to the department and there has been no negotiation till now, one of the staff of PHED told reporters, requesting anonymity.
Asked about the amount of money demanded by the militant organization, he said no actual amount was mentioned by them but other than revealing the name of the organization to the staff present on that day.
The unidentified men also threatened that one of the staff will have to be kidnapped.
According to a source, a phone call was received at the office today setting a deadline of 12 noon today.
The call also threatened that the responsibility of Ibomcha life rest on the office staff.
Ibomcha was abducted by four unidentified persons at his office on the night of December 7, according to his family.
The kidnappers also warned his family not to report to the police about the kidnapping.
