Imphal, April 09 2012:
The Union Minister of State for Defence Dr.MM Pallam Raju would be inaugurating the newly constructed road at Tamenglong.
The Minister, who would be accompanied by Colonel DPK Pillai, would visit Tamenglong on April 10 at 12 am to inaugurate the newly constructed road at Tamenglong by the Army as also other projects, according to PRO (Defence).
It is reported that the Union Minister of State for Defence would first visit the border town Moreh before meeting the Governor and the Chief Minister of the state.
He would then proceed to Tamenglong to have a firsthand account of the progress made in the work along National Highway 37, which is being taken up by Border Road Organisation (BRO) .
The National Highway 37 (formerly NH-53) connecting Manipur with Assam and other parts of the country, often described as a second life line of Manipur, has been in the news for its deplorable condition for quite long.
It is through this road that most of the supplies of the state reach the capital Imphal, besides the National Highway 36 which also connects Imphal with Assam and other states through Nagaland.
It may be mentioned that though the highway passing through Dimapur in Nagaland is in a better shape than the highway passing through Tamenglong district in Manipur, transporters prefer to face the hardship of taking the highway passing through Tamenglong in order to avoid extortion and demands if they pass through Nagaland.
Meanwhile, it is reported that the chief minister of Manipur met the Governor for nearly one hour on Monday.
Though the reason for the visit of the Chief Minister is not definitely known, it is reportedly suspected to be in connection with matter concerning expansion of Ministry and the forthcoming visit of Union Minister of State for Defence.
