National Handloom Day

Weavers' Service Centre, Ministry of Textiles and Department of Commerce and Industries jointly observed the first National Handloom Day celebration at Hotel Imphal today.
Speaking at the occasion, chief guest Commerce and Industries Minister Govindas Konthoujam said the observance of a National Handloom day would largely benefit the people as the State holds a distinct place in the handloom industry of India.
According to him, the handloom industries in India are slowly dying as more advanced form of machineries have been introduced to produce cheaper fabrics.
Efforts are being made to uphold and promote the State handloom practices.
Larger investments have been laid to increase production, the Minister said.
The State Government is mulling introduction of a State level award for weavers to promote handloom industry in the State.
Talented and hardworking weavers from the State would be conferred with the award along with a cash amount of Rs 1 lakh each.
A sum of Rs 10 lakh has also been kept aside for the purpose, he stated.
The Minister, during his speech also assured the introduction of new schemes to generate employment opportunities for the people.
Commerce and Industries Commissioner VK Dewangan and Director of Commerce and Industries B John Tlangtinkhuma were also present at the celebration.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched the first National Handloom Day celebration at Chennai with an aim to promote India's handloom industry globally.
The live telecast of the launching event was also played during the event.
