Over 40 persons injured when police personnel fired tear gas shells & scuffles

The 48-hour general strike called by Students' Wing of Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System ended on Thursday evening at 6 pm.
More than 40 activists were injured in scuffles and tear gas shell firing during the two day general strike that crippled normal life in the State.
Imphal city which witnessed a war-like situation resembled a ghost city during the two day strike.
Local residents came out to enforce the general strike imposed since 6 pm of August 4 against the police brutality on Monday.
Due to the strike normal, life was disrupted.
Markets, shops, offices and educational institutes were totally shut down.
The activists burned tyres, woods across the roads and dumped boulders and other obstacles to prevent all sections of people from venturing outdoors movement.

Police who tried to disperse the people had to encounter angry agitators at several places.
To disperse the strike supporters, police fired several tear gas shells.
However, most of them could not be dispersed.
The strike enforcers reassembled soon after the departure of the police and security personnel.
People at Bhagyabati Leikai came out and stood together while police fired tear gas shells injuring two persons.
The irate mob shouted many slogans against the police and tried to rush towards them but the personnel eventually managed to disperse them.
Similar face-offs were reported at Uripok Achom Leikai where SDPO of Imphal West reportedly got injured after protesters pelted stones and fired catapults.
Different areas along the Tiddim Road including Kwakeithel, Sega Road, Keishampat, Keishamthong, and Singjamei, Khagempalli saw the worst situations.
A large number of people at Sagolband area also started forming one group supporting the general strike.
People clashed with police personnel after they fired tear gas shells.
More than 40 people were injured and they have been admitted to several hospitals, including RIMS and JNIMS, during the two day general strike.
Meanwhile, supporting the ongoing people's demand for inner line permit system in Manipur, sit-in protests have been continuously staged at various areas of the valley districts.
Apunba Nupi Lup Sega Lambi Thouda BhabokLeikai staged a sit-in at ThoudaBhabokLeikai on Thursday demanding ILPS in the State.
Thangmeiband LairenHanjaba Leikai Maning Singlup, Singjamei Wangma Torban KshetriLeikaiLeikai, United Youth Organisation Women Welfare Association and Women Development Association of SingjameiWangma Bhagyapati Leikai also staged sit-ins at their respective areas.
Such protests were also organised at Khongman Okram Chuthek, Sagolband Salam Leikai, Thangmeiband WathamLeirak, SagolbandMoirang Leirak demanding immediate implementation of the much awaited inner line permit system.
Besides, protesters at YumnamLeikai and Ngakraba Leirak pelted stones to the police personnel while they tried to disperse the general strike supporters.
The personnel fired tear gas shells several times but people started pelting stones from two different directions.
Eight security personnel including one Sub-Inspector of Imphal Police Station fled and took shelter at a nearby house.
The protesters continued the stone throwing but at last additional forces arrived and rescued the trapped personnel.
