Awareness programme on prevention of 'Substance Abuse and Alcoholism' held

A one day awareness cum sensitization programme on " Prevention of Substance Abuse and Alcoholism" for the local youth of Talui village was held at Pre-Centenary Hall, Talui village Ukhrul, today.
District Social Welfare officer (DSWO) Ukhrul, D Mathew Maring in his keynote address elaborated on the main objectives of the "Nasha Mukt Bharat Campaign (NMBC)" executed by the District Social Welfare Department, Ukhrul.
He stated that NMBC will generate awareness for the youth of 14-21 years to stop them from indulging in drugs.
The department has organized 18 awareness programmes in Ukhrul district so far.
Meanwhile, Councillor Kapangpam Zimik mentioned that substance addiction and drug abuse is a serious threat to the society and expressed his anguish over the rapid increase in the number of villagers abusing drugs and other substances.
Apam Horam, chairman of Doulus NGO, Ukhrul who attended the programme as a resource person shared his experience on drug addiction and asserted that he has dedicated his life to advocate and campaign in the fight against drugs and alcohol.
He categorized three family setups for any person to become a drug addict.
The 'Restaurant' type of home, where there is hardly any interaction between the parents and children, 'Warehouse' type of home is a disorganized family setup, and the third is an abusive family.
Apam Horam appealed to all the participants to take serious note of their children's behaviour to prevent them from indulging in any form of substance abuse.
The awareness campaign jointly organized by Talui Katamnao Long and District Social Welfare office, Ukhrul was attended by more than 70 youths of Talui village.
