Aggrieved teachers to fast from Oct 16

Undergraduate teachers have set October 15 as deadline and warned of launching fast unto death provided their demand for upgradation of undergraduate/primary teachers to graduate posts is not met.
General Secretary Athokpam Khogen of Demand Committee for the promotion of undergraduate/primary teachers to graduate post (PUUPTGP) has lamented that the primary teachers working under the Department of Education, Manipur have been deprived of their legitimate right for promotion to graduate teachers over the last 30 years.
If the government fails to fulfil the demands by the said deadline, various agitations including fast unto death would be launched from the following day, Khogen while talking to mediapersons at Manipur Press Club here today.
Khogen pointed out that the government had given several assurances during meetings with the committee in the past but their words were not put into action.
Recalling the last meeting with Education Minister Moirangthem Okendro in his office chamber in the presence of Principal Secretary in-charge of Education and the Director of Education, where the Director had made verbal assurance to meet their demand before the end of September 2013, Khogen said that the word has not been materialized as yet.
It may be brought to light here even after approval has been given by the existing rules and regulations for graduate teachers i.e.50% for direct recruitment and 50% for promotion, many a hundred graduate teachers have been directly recruited by violating the existing criteria in the year 1997 and 2007.In view of the dissatisfaction faced over the years, the demand committee has decided to launch various forms of agitations in a democratic way to meet their demands.
