Flood situation remains grim, many places still submerged

Yaithibi Loukon, an area earmarked for setting up of National Sports University in Thoubal district has been submerged.
Although water level receded in and around Pallel area, water has taken a reverse diversion and flooded the Yaithibi Loukon.
About 400 acres on the Eastern side of Asian Highway-1 and long stretch on the opposite side remain flooded.
Irengban village of about 100 households is completely inundated and the people have been evacuated to Langthabal and Sora areas.
The paddy fields at Sora, Langthabal Yaithibi Khunou and Tekcham Papan remained submerged.
The farmers informed that they have completed the paddy transplantation as well as weeding.
However it is unlikely that the water will recede.
Rather, the water level increased by three feet today.
Flood continued to cause havoc in Top Khabi area of Imphal West district too.
Even as water level in Nambul river recedes, Top Khabi area continued to remain submerged, according to a statement issued by the Village Water and Sanitation Committee, Top Khabi.
Due to submergence of the area, farmers could not take up cultivation work, and people are facing drinking water scarcity problem.
Besides, there is fear among the people about the possible outbreak of disease, it said.
As such, the committee decided to organise a public meeting at Top Khabi to deliberate on recurrent flood in the area with the participation of elected members including concerned MP, MLA.
It also decided to ask the authority concerned to review the relief items of 2 kgs of rice and 1 litre each of oil per household to the flood affected villagers of the area.
They also decided to restrict movement of heavy vehicles along the village road until the roads destroyed by the flood are repaired.
The Committee also conveyed gratitude to local MLA for extending financial assistance of Rs 2500 for cleaning the clogged canal.
At the same time, Popular Front of India, Manipur State has urged the State Govt to provide relief materials to flood affected victims of Thoubal district at the earliest.
Although flood waters were seen receding in most part of the State today, the situation remains grim at Tekcham and Tentha villages as water continues to flow into these villages from Kharungpat, Ekop Pat and Langathel river.
More than 8 crore worth fish farms of the area have been ruined in the flood.
Veteran Sports Organisation (VSO), Tekcham has appealed to State Government to assess the extent of damage caused by the flood.
The organisation also demanded the State Government to provide compensation for the loss incurred in the calamity.
VSO, in association with SDAU has set up relief camps at Tekcham Mayai Leikai community hall, Tekcham Laibung Meira Shang and Tekcham Maning Ching to aid the flood affected victims.
About 608 villagers, at present are taking shelter at these relief camps as majority of the houses, roads and agricultural fields remain submerged.
MLA Paonam Brojen has assured continued supply of relief materials to these camps until the flood recedes.
Assam Rifles post at Khongjom and former MLA M Hemanta continue to supply safe drinking water to the people.
At Tentha Heibung, social workers have been supplying drinking water to affected villagers of the area.
Other than this, no assistance have been sent by the State Government till date, Tranquility club, Tentha Heibung supervisor alleged.
Relief camps have been set up at two different places in the area.
Meanwhile, a team of Bharatya Janata Yuva Morcha, Manipur Pradesh visited various places to assess flood situation in the State today.
The team will also provide relief material to affected villagers during its drive.
Led by BJYM State president Oinam Malesh and vice-president, the team donated rice, sugar and other essential commodities at relief camps set up at Wangjing, Salungpham, Kairembikhok, Heirok and Tentha.
The team also included UK based disaster management organisa- tion called Khalsa Aid.
