Locals protest arrest of Thokchom Birjit

Thoubal, August 03 2024: Protesting against the arrest of Thokchom Birjit (40 yrs) of Heirok Part II Keithel Mamang by Imphal West Cyber Crime Police, the locals of Heirok staged a protest by blocking the Heirok Keithel road yesterday.

The locals of Heirok including Meira paibis, members of Heirok Apunba Lup and FINE Society staged the protest demanding unconditional release of Thokchom Birjit who is suspected to be arrested in connection with a Facebook post.

Later, the protestors marched towards Heirok Police Station and submitted a memorandum.

They also submitted a memorandum each to the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Thoubal.

The protestors chanted slogans such as 'We condemn the arrest of Birjit', 'Stop arresting civilians', 'Release Birjit without any conditions' etc.

Denouncing the actions of the higher authorities intended to curtail the freedom of speech and expressions of the civilians, the protestors cautioned that intense agitation will be staged if Birjit is not released at the earliest.
