Imphal, March 03 2012:
A one-day awareness campaign on the hazardous effects of using Endusulfan Insecticides (Hildan) while fishing in Loktak Lake was held today at Phoubakchao Keithel, Imphal West.
The awareness programme was jointly organised by Loktak Development Authority and Loktak Project Affected Area Farmers' and Land Owners' Association.
Speaking on the occasion as resource person, Dr S Shyamjai pointed out that Loktak Lake is a major source of income for many people in the state and most of the people living in and around the lake use various techniques to catch fish from the lake without much effort to handsome income.
Among such techniques, use of Endosulfan Insecticides and other hazardous chemicals is most dangerous as these insecticides not only kill the fish but also affect to all the living beings including the people who eat the fish and drink water polluted with such chemicals.
He further pointed out that these harmful chemicals take more than 3 or 4 years to dilute totally in the water, thus resulting in decrease of fish breedings and causing other biological hazards to the eco-system.
He also appealed to all concerned to stop using such chemicals to save the endangered lake.
Lecturer, A Bira and Project Director of LDA Th Ibobi graced the inaugural function of the awareness campaign as Chief Guest and President respectively.
