'Unpredictable & dangerous: Heart disease number one killer in the world'

The World Heart Day along with World Elderly Day was organised at Medical Directorate Lamphel today.
The programme was jointly organised by Directorate of Health Services, GoM & State Health Society NHM Manipur in association with National Programme for Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE), National Programme for Prevention & Control of Cancers, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases & Stroke (NPCDCS) Imphal East & Imphal West District Health Society and Manipur Heart Foundation.
Speaking as chief guest of the function, Director of Health Services Dr K Rajo said that non-communicable diseases including heart disease, Cancer, stroke, Diabetes are increasing day by day.
He said that heart disease among all these NCDs are increasing rapidly making cardiovascular disease (Heart Disease) a number one killer in the world.

As this disease is unpredictable and neither shows no symptoms nor have age limit, mass awareness on preventive measures of heart disease is of utmost important, he said and added that the programme has been organsied to fulfil this very objective.
Explaining the probability of heart disease, Dr Rajo said that cigarettes have over 7000 chemicals out of which 70 are capable of causing Cancer and added that smoking can lead to such diseases from the toxic chemicals and ingredients which can directly attack the heart.
Underlining the importance of imparting such awareness to the masses, Dr Rajo said that people should not consume alcohol or cigarettes/tobacco products and rather practice basic exercises, consume balanced diet (maintaining the intake of salt, sugar and oil) and having calm and good thoughts and also maintaining one's BP can help in keeping the diseases at bay.
When a person gets older, the muscles in the body gets weak while some are most likely to go into depression, some elderly have Diabetes or BP problem, discomfort in joints while moving or complication in urination, he informed.
Maintaining that the youngsters or the adults should always take care of the older people, Dr Rajo said that apart from taking medical care, they should also be treated with love.
He said that the hospitals at the district level have Genetic Care section to provide assistance, especially for elderly.
Dr Rajo maintained that the awareness programme also aims to urge all the people to be aware of these diseases and adopt healthy lifestyle and also to take proper care of the elderly.
He continued that Yoga is one of the exercises which have provided to be effective for all person including the older people as well.
He remarked that Yoga can help in blood circulation and attaining peace in the mind and the body.
Senior Public Health Specialist, Imphal East, CMO office Dr RK Tilotama and Senior Regional Director, MOHFW, GoI Dr L Ashananda were present in the function.
