Rain induced landslides throw life out of gear at Ukhrul

Ukhrul, May 29 2024:
Heavy rain accompanied by gusty wind triggered landslides at multiple places in Ukhrul.
Walls have collapsed at several places in the district in the last 24 hours.
Two minor girls namely Soshine Kaping (9) and Phameirin Kaping (17), d/o Ningreison Kaping were partially buried under mud for about an hour at Viewland IV due to a landslide in the area.
They, fortunately, were rescued by the parents of the girls with the help of the people in the neighbourhood.
Both Soshine and Phameirin suffered severe injuries on the heads, eyes and legs but they are out of danger now.
Following the incident, the district administration led by Ukhrul DC Kengoo Zuringla rushed to the district hospital and enquired about the health conditions of the two girls.
Both the girls have been referred to a hospital in Imphal for further treatment.

The DC, as an immediate relief, extended financial assistance to the parents of the two girls for their medical expenses.
In another incident at Alungtang, one house got completely damaged after the collapse of a retaining wall but no one was injured.
According to the owner of the house Mawungam Mung, properties worth Rs 45 lakh were damaged.
The severe weather also caused a landslide in between Shirui village and Lunghar along National Highway-102A (Ukhrul-Jessami road) and vehicular movement was halted along the road.
Numerous landslides took place along Ukhrul-Imphal road too, leaving many vehicles stranded at various locations in Hungpung.
Meanwhile, clearing of the debris brought by the mudslide at Mongkot Chepu area yesterday using two excavators took at least 2 hours.
Visibly, there is no proper drainage along Ukhrul-Imphal road and water flows erratically along the highway causing vehicles to swivel in the mud.
According to the MET Centre in Imphal, the rainfall recorded between May 27 at 8.30 am and May 28 at 8.30 am was 92.2mm and the same caused waterlogging in many areas of the town including the district headquarters ground at Wino Bazar.
Many trees have also been uprooted in many parts of Ukhrul while paddy fields have been inundated at Kazar, Muiyi, Lungtang, Moumi, Khaireng, Shaokhak, Tuira, Marao and Langdang kong areas among others.
It is reported that the retaining wall of the western block of Ukhrul Mini Secretariat has also collapsed and the same has made the District Library office vulnerable.
Some houses have also been destroyed at Phungreitang.
According to various sources, 120 fishing ponds, 47 irrigation canals and over 209 hectares of paddy fields in the district have been badly affected while six inter village link roads have been blocked by the debris brought by landslides.
The district administration has started collecting the detailed information of the tragic incident so as to submit the ground report of the district to the department concerned.
An advisory has been issued to the people of Ukhrul.
