Governor meets senior citizens

Governor V Shanmuganathan had a candid discussion on the present situation of the State with some prominent senior citizens at Raj Bhavan today.
On the Governor's invitation, Padmashree RK Jhaljit, former Minister RV Mingthing, Dr Arambam Lokendra, Senior Advocate Khaidem Mani, Prof L Sadananda and senior journalist BB Sharma met the Governor at around 11.30 am.
Khaidem Mani said that present issues like ILPS, peace accord between NSCN (IM) and Government of India, insurgency and AFSPA were discussed at length during the interaction that lasted for around two hours.
He said that the senior citizens told the Governor that people erupted in mass protest in Churachandpur due to misunderstanding after three Bills were passed by the State Assembly regarding implementation of ILPS.
They also told the Governor that they are suspicious that a group of people might be playing a provocative political game to ignite tension, Mani said.
Regarding the peace accord between NSCN (IM) and Government of India, they informed the Governor about people's apprehension on possible threats to the territorial integrity of the State.
Khaidem Mani further said that the senior citizens also kept their opinion before the Governor that the problem of insurgency must be solved through talks only.
They also told the Governor that many people have been killed and many women raped under the cover of AFSPA 1958 and around 1600 AFSPA related cases are still pending at the Supreme Court, Mani said.
