Talking to The Sangai Express, RIMS Medical Superintendent Prof Ch Arunkumar said that they have written to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for its approval to launch plasma therapy at RIMS.
Further, RIMS authority has initiated due process to purchase necessary equipment.
Plasma therapy would be used on COVID-19 patients whose medical conditions are mid-level to serious and there are already three oxygen concentrator machines at RIMS, Prof Arunkumar said.
It is said that plasma extracted from a healthy person who has been tested negative after being positive for COVID-19 would be injected to COVID-19 patients.
Plasma would be extracted 28 days after the person has been tested negative.
Meanwhile, RIMS has started prescribing Ramdesivir drug for COVID-19 patients.
Out of two patients who have been given Ramdesivir drug, one has been discharged after recovery while the other one has been improving.
The existing stock of Ramdesivir drug currently available at RIMS would be enough to treat two patients.
Nonetheless, some more Ramdesivir vials would arrive tomorrow, he informed.
He added that there are 66 ventilators at RIMS.
