In line with the recommendations of the Academic Reforms Committee headed by former Manipur University VC Prof IS Khaidem as chairman, the State Government has been seriously considering the option of upgrading DM College to the status of a deemed university.
Talking to The Sangai Express, Education Minister M Okendro stated that the Academic Reforms Committee recommended combining DM College of Science, DM College of Arts and DM College and turn them into a single autonomous college where Post Graduate courses would be opened.
The Government would examine to translate the same recommendations into action, informed the Education Minister.
The committee's report suggested opening School of Sciences, School of Social Sciences and Humanities and School of Commerce and Management under the combined DM College, and also to introduce semester system.
It also recommended revamping certain colleges and make them high class educational institutions at district level.
The recommended colleges are Modern College in Imphal East district, GP Women's College and Imphal College in Imphal West district, Thoubal College in Thoubal district, Moirang College in Bishnupur district, Presidency College in Senapati district, Pettigrew College in Ukhrul district, United College in Chandel district, Churachandpur College in Churachandpur district and Tamenglong College in Tamenglong district.
Areas of priority would be identified for development of colleges which were not included in the recommended list, stated the Education Minister.
The committee further recommended renaming five Government colleges as Ideal Girls College of Teacher Education, NG College of Teacher Education, YK College of Teacher Education, Lamka College of Teacher Education and Hill College of Teacher Education so as to make up the existing shortfalls in the field of teachers' education.
It was also recommended to rename Nambol L Sanoi College as Nambol L Sanoi College of Physical Education and Maharaja Bodhchandra College as Maharaja Bodhchandra College of Performing Arts.
DM College of Teacher Education may be upgraded and renamed as Manipur Institute of Advanced Studies in Education as per the recommendations of the committee.
Another recommendation of the committee is to bring management and service condition of teachers of aided and private colleges under a specific framework, Okendro conveyed.
