Imphal, November 25 2011:
The Loktak Protection Act would be amended during the winter session of the State Assembly so that Thanga, Karang and Ething which are included in the core zone of the lake are not covered by the said Act.
The Government has made preparations for amendment of the Act, stated Thanga AC MLA T Mangibabu who is also chief whip of the Congress party.
Speaking to media persons at his office today, Mangibabu clarified that there is no restriction on fishing in Loktak Lake.
For those fishing families who have been rendered homeless after they were evicted from their phumdi houses, the Government should make arrangements to accommodate them.
The Chief Minister decided to remove the phumdis after the Planning Commission informed him that no more funds would be released if the phumdis are not cleared.
Saying that the issue has been politicalised, Mangibabu reminded that the phumdi clearance work started from 1997 when fishing colonies were developed at Phubala Mamang, Laishoi and Thanga Heisnam.
Loktak Lake is not the sole responsibility of Thanga AC MLA.
Cooperation of the surrounding villages is a must, Mangibabu asserted.
