Former Dy CM Amutombi expires

Former Deputy Chief Minis-ter Khumujam Amutombi passed away at his Mayang Imphal Konchak Maning Leikai residence at around 8 pm yesterday.
He was 83 .
Last rites of the former Deputy Chief Minister was performed this morning.
With full honour, the coffin wrapped with the flag of Indian National Congress was taken to the local crematorium where hundreds of people gathered to pay their last respects to the former Deputy Chief Minister.
The procession was accompanied by a band party of Manipur Rifles who played a tune of melancholy.
At the crematorium, people paid floral tributes to the departed leader.
MLA Yamthong Haokip, MLA Tongbram Mangibabu and many other Congress men too paid their homage to Amutombi.

Amutombi who held MA and BEd degrees began his career as a teacher.
He first joined the teaching profession as an Assistant Teacher at Mayang Imphal Aided High School in 1952 .
He held the post of Principal at different Higher Secondary Schools.
He retired from the teaching profession in 1978 .
He was elected to Manipur Legislative Assembly from Mayang Imphal A/C for the first time in 1980 and became the Deputy Chairman of Manipur State Planning Board.
Ten years later, he was re-elected for the second time and went on to become the Deputy Chief Minister.
In 2000, he held the post of Planning, Tourism and Cooperation Minister.
Amutombi is the father of incumbent Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar.
Members of the Manipur Legislative Assembly today observed two minutes' silence in honour of the departed soul of the former Deputy Chief Minister.
Amutombi held the post of Deputy Chief Minister in the Government led by late RK Ranbir.
O Ibobi described Amutombi as a very forbearing and down to earth leader.
His demise has left an irreparable void in the society, Ibobi said while conveying solidarity to the bereaved family.
Speaker Th Lokeshore remarked that Amutombi was known for his dedication to the profession of tea- ching and also for his selfless service for the State.
Meanwhile Thangmei-band Block Congress Com- mittee and the Manipur Ex-MLAs Welfare Association have condoled the demise of Kh Amutombi.
