Rhetoric cannot restore ties : Irom Sharmila

Imphal, November 23 2015: Irom Chanu Sharmila has said that the age-old ties, love and amity among the valley and hill people of the State cannot be restored or strengthened by mere rhetoric but can be realised only by showing it in action.

Sharmila was speaking to media persons after she was produced before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West today.

Sharmila was brought to the Cheirap Court Complex at around 1 pm from Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences security ward where she is presently lodged.

The next hearing of the case has been fixed for November 30 .

She said it is now the time to reflect on factors that are responsible for making the valley-hill relations unstable.

Sharmila stressed the need to introduce cultures, history and languages of different communities of the State in school syllabus so that people of the State come to know each other closely.

She also said that frequent social interaction among the valley and hill people will foster better relations among the people.

The anti-AFSPA crusader further said that people of the State could not elect good leaders as most of the people underestimate their voting rights.

Sharmila further asked why huge amount of money has been spent in feeding her.

She appealed to all sections of the people to extend support to her cause.
