Imphal, July 23 2014:
RIMS authority is allegedly working to appoint voluntary nurses engaged in RIMS for a period of one month on contract basis for a longer period.
The vo-luntary nurses were selected to serve at RIMS through draw of lots.
A well placed source informed that nursing service in different wards and sections of RIMS was brought to a grinding halt after the hospital's nurses launched cease work strike last month.
In order to ensure uninterrupted nursing service, RIMS authority initiated due procedures to rope in service of voluntary nurses.
In view of the urgent situation, all the applicants were allowed to take part in a draw of lot and 76 voluntary nurses were selected.
Out of them, 66 were given duties in different wards and sections.
When they were given duties at RIMS, they were not given any assurance about salary or honorarium.
They should work at RIMS only with uniform allowance only for one month from June 18 to July 17 .
The cease work strike undertaken by RIMS nurses was called off on June 19 after an understanding was reached between RIMS authority and the agitating nur- ses.
Subsequently, the nurses returned to normal duties.
After the agitating nurses returned to their normal duties, there was little need of the service of voluntary nur-ses.
As such, the Nursing Superintendent submitted a report to the RIMS Deputy Director (Administration) on July 16 informing that there was no need to retain the voluntary nurses.
The report also suggested about awarding certificates of appreciation to the voluntary nurses.
Along with the report, a list of the voluntary nurses and their places of duties was submitted to the Deputy Director.
However, notwithstanding the Nursing Superin- tendent's report and expiry of their engagement period, the voluntary nurses' engagement at RIMS has been extended by one more month thereby evoking a question whether RIMS authority is planning to recruit the voluntary nurses on contract basis.
After extending the engagement period by one month, the RIMS authority has been allegedly working to extend the engagement by two more months, informed the source.
Appointment of nurses on contract basis who were at first engaged for a specific period is against rules, added the source.
