Imphal, June 23 2024: After the attack on Meitei settlements in Jiribam recently, in a major escalation, armed Kuki militants rained bullets on Thamnapokpi and Shanti-khongbal villages of Imphal East last night.

The attack on Meitei settlements came after a gap of some days.

Heavily armed Kuki militants carried out the attack on the two villages at around 10.30 pm yesterday.

Village volunteers returned fire and the intense gunfight lasted at least 30 minutes.

No one was injured in the exchange of fire.

State security forces and Central Armed Police Force rushed to the spot and intervened to stop the fighting.

Locals of the area, however, raised concern regar- ding the response of the Central security personnel accusing them of not acting against the Kuki militants who had attacked the Meitei village without provocation.

On the other hand, in what could be termed as a "terror attack", an office cum godown of local firms dealing in organic produce at Jiribam's Borobekra subdivision was destroyed using explosives just before dawn today.

Reportedly, explosives set off a major fire at around 3.30 am today that destroyed the office/godown of the firms, Matik Mangaal Private Limited and Leishambi Private Limited at Goakhal under Borobekra.

Th Subash, director cum managing director of the Matik Mangaal Private Limited and Leishambi Private Limited, has strongly condemned the explosion and burning down of the office/godown.

In a press meet held at Manipur Press club, Imphal, Subash said the firms produce organic fruits and vegetables.

The firms have been in the business since the past 7 years and were exporting organic products.

Blaming "armed miscreants" for targeting the firms, Subash said the burning down of the office using explosives was very unfortunate and a loss for not only the Meiteis but all communities in Jiribam.

The godown was used for storing organic fruits and vegetables.

It wasn't just for a particular community but for all communities residing in Jiribam.

The firms are helping farmers of all communities generate income.

The attack on the firms' godown was very unfortunate, Subash said, appealing to all groups concerned not to repeat the attack in future.
