Source: The Sangai Express

Imphal, December 22 2021: In an incident that is as chilling as it was abhorrent a 21 year old student from Heirok was shot dead in the wee hours of today in yet another poll related violence.

The father of the deceased was also critically injured in the gun attack.

This was not the first time that poll related violence has rocked Heirok Assembly Constituency though this is the first time that a human life has been lost.

Poll related violence has rocked Heirok Assembly Constituency in the recent past with reports coming in of clashes between workers of different intending candidates, houses being targeted, blank firing etc.

Violence and tension had also gripped other Assembly Constituencies notably Andro, Lamlai, Naoriya Pakhanglakpa and Singjamei in the last many days.

The deceased has been identified as Ningthoujam Rohit alias Kunou of Heirok Part II Mayai Leikai.

It is reported that the father of the deceased N Premchandra alias Makar (53) who also sustained bullet injuries is in a critical condition.

They were attacked by unknown miscreants in their backyard at around 1 am.

Both the father and the son were rushed to Raj Medicity but the latter succumbed to his injuries.

Premchandra is undergoing treatments at the hospital.

Rohit was a 5th semester student of Thoubal College.

Reportedly, Premchandra is a Congress supporter.

As per a complaint lodged at Heirok police station by the deceased's brother N Roshan, about 15-16 armed individuals entered their backyard by dismantling their boundary fencing at around 12.15 am.

Apart from assaulting Rohit and Premchandra, the miscreants also shot them with a single barrel gun, alleged the complainant.

As per the complaint lodged, the assailants were led by Thokchom Putro (33) from Heirok Part II Thokchom Leikai, Ningthoujam Panan (33) from Heirok Part III Tourangbam Leikai, Thokchom Henrik alias Naobi (27) from Heirok Part I, Thokchom Sanathoi @ Lai (33) from Heirok Part II Mayai Leikai, Laishram Biken (24) and Khundongbam Nicky alias Anju (34) .

The complainant charged that the deceased and his father were shot by Thokchom Putro.

Meanwhile, as per a report from another source, the firing took place following a confrontation between BJP and Congress supporters at Heirok Bazar.

During the confrontation, offices of both BJP and Congress at Heirok Bazar were reportedly damaged while two persons sustained injuries.

The injured, as per the source, are Kh Rakesh (30) and Kh Sanamacha (22) .

Denouncing the gun attack on Rohit and his father, a sit-in protest blocked roads at Heirok.

The protesters raised slogans against the BJP Government, the local MLA and use of violence to win elections.

A 12 member JAC Against the Killing of Ninthoujam Rohit was formed during a meeting convened at Heirok Mayai Upper Primary School.

A team of police and BSF have been sent to Heirok to maintain law and order there.

BJP Heirok Mandal has also condemned the incident in the strongest terms and demanded arrest of the assailants.

Staff and students of Thoubal College have mourned the demise of N Rohit.
