Imphal, November 22 2012:
After the Union Home Ministry's assurance to depute an official team to work out the modality for political dialogue between KNO/UPF with the Government of India after the ongoing Parliamentary session was conveyed to the Kuki State Demand Committee (KSDC) for the second time today, KSDC has agreed to suspend the indefinite bandh with immediate effect.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam has once again asserted that one fundamental point of SoO ground rules is the untouchability of Manipur's territorial integrity.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting with KSDC representatives, Gaikhangam noted that no political dialogue has been initiated even though SoO pact is 7 years old.
Nonetheless, at the initiative of the State Government, the Centre has agreed to send an official team after the winter session of Parliament to work out the modality for political dialogue with KNO and UPF.
On being queried about the State Government's position with regard to the modality of political dialogue, the Deputy Chief Minister evaded the matter saying that it was too early to give any comment.
Nevertheless, he reminded that keeping status quo of Manipur's territorial integrity was one fundamental point of SoO ground rules.
The State Government would consult the Centre on the matter, if necessary.
Regarding the demand for a carving out a separate demand, the Centre should deal with it.
The State Government's role is limited to only that of a facilitator, Gaikhangam stated.
The meeting was also attended by Education Minister Okendro, MLA Yamthong Haokip, Chief Secretary DS Poonia, DGP Y Joykumar and ADGP LM Khaute.
KSDC was represented by chairman H Haokip, general secretary Benjamin Mate, vice chairman S Haokip and spokesman George Guite.
They said that the bandh has been suspended based on the Union Home Ministry's assurance.
But it may be resumed anytime if the State and Centre do not take up some concrete steps soon after the parliamentary session.
They also conveyed gratitude to the people for bearing the inconveniences caused by the bandh.
