Imphal, February 22 2017:
The United Committee Manipur (UCM) and the Committee of Civil Societies Kangleipak (CCSK) are all set to host a common meeting of all candidates of the ensuing State Assembly election so as to elicit the contents of the Framework Agreement signed between the Government of India and NSCN-IM on August 3, 2015 .
Speaking to media persons at the Lamphelpat office of UCM today, CCSK secretary general Jitendra Ningomba said that a feeling of anxiety and uncertainty has been tormenting the minds of Manipuri people since the Framework Agreement was signed.
In this connection, all the candidates who have pledged to navigate Manipur to a new direction of development and progress have been invited to a public meeting scheduled on February 24 at GM Hall.
The candidates would be asked to state their positions on the Framework Agreement and vow to make the contents of the agreement accessible to the people of Manipur, Jitendra said.
A similar gathering would be held at Nambol Bazar community hall and all the political parties have been invited, Jitendra said.
UCM general secretary YK Dhiren remarked that the people of Manipur have a nagging suspicion about the Framework Agreement regarding its possible impacts on Manipur and its territorial integrity.
All the candidates should pledge that they would oppose the Framework Agreement in case it impinges on the interests of Manipur.
UCM, CCSK and other like minded organisations have been opposing creation of administrative units or homelands on ethnic lines.
The candidates should further pledge that they would oppose creation of such ethno-exclusive administrative units or homelands based on the Framework Agreement or any other document, Dhiren said.
He then appealed to all politicians to join the swearing ceremony.
In case, any politicians/candidates cannot attend the swearing function on the scheduled date, they can collect copies of the oath from the office of UCM and append their signatures before the election.
Yet, UCM and CCSK would like the candidates to come to the scheduled gathering and make their pledge, Dhiren said.
Names of candidates who make the pledge and those who do not would be published in the media, he added.
