Imphal, June 21 2011:
In spite of being the oldest police station in Tamenglong district, Nungba police station is today reeling the impact of shortages and deficiencies.
At Nungba police station, there is no sign of the police modernisation programme taken up all over the State.
According to Nungba sub-divisional headquarters Thoubai secretary Bandai Kamei and Nungba Bazar Board chairman Ngankeilak Kamei, Nungba PS was set up in 1957 and it is one of the oldest police stations not only in Tamenglong but in the entire State.
Notwithstanding several measures taken up by the Government under police modernisation programme, the Noney (Longmai) police outpost is in much better shape than Nungba PS.
The police station functioning under SDPO has no adequate facility for water, electricity or quarters.
The approach road leading to the police station from the National Highway is also lying in a pathetic condition.
The security barrack is of the lowest standard, Bandai Kamei and Ngan-keilak Kamei said.
One SDPO, one OC, two SI's, two ASI's, one Havildar, 23 personnel and 45 VDF personnel are stationed in the police station.
In the absence of adequate quarters, there is no room to accommodate when family members of the police personnel posted there come for a visit.
A small room lit by a single solar lamp serves as the OC's room.
A shattered house which has been partially burnt and appears more of a cow-shed serves as barrack.
Bamboos matted by peiyas pass off as the beds for the VDF personnel .
In terms of infrastructure, Nungba PS has only two Gypsys, one for the SDPO and another for the OC.
There is no other vehicle.
The OC's vehicle is also used for fetching water twice a day from a place 7 Kms afar.
With the provision of water so limited, the police personnel take bath only twice a week in dry season in spite of the sweltering heat.
Except for six solar lamps, the Government has not provided anything to the police station in the last three years, Bandai Kamei and Ngankeilak Kamei said.
Though Nungba PS occupies a strategic position with regard to Imphal-Jiribam highway, the police station is most ill-equipped.
Though personnel of the police station are staying together with Territorial Army in the same complex, the PS has only four rifles of its own, Bandai Kamei and Ngankeilak Kamei added.
