Imphal, December 17 2024:
Awful road conditions coupled with slow progress in the implementation of Imphal Smart City project has literally turned Thangal Keithel into a filthy area with piles of garbage seen in different parts of the market place.
Lack of awareness on public health among the traders and shopkeepers is also one big factor which has literally transformed Thangal Keithel into a dumping ground for trash as they habitually throw waste at areas wherever they find it convenient.
Waste management at Thangal Keithel is an alien term despite a large amount of waste and trash being generated from shops everyday.
It is reported that the garbage trucks which used to collect trash from along Shani Mandir to Khuyathong road stretch also hasn't shown up for a while.
The open space at the adjacent area between Thangal Keithel and Khuyathong has become a junkyard for the auto workshops and other shops in the area with piles of tyres, scrap vehicle parts, plastic items and other trash accumulating in the area.
A commuter told The Sangai Express that its been over a year that the Government dug out the road stretches at Thangal Keithel for reconstruction as part of Imphal Smart City project but the progress of the work is disappointing.
People frequent Thangal Keithel everyday as it is an important market place but piling up garbage at open spaces and besides footpaths is concerning, he said.
He also said that the way in which people park vehicles causes serious inconveniences to pedestrians at different areas of the keithel as the parking vehicles occupy a large portion of the road.
He expressed desire for the Government to clean the garbage and ensure proper waste management for the keithel areas so as to maintain cleanliness at market places.
Another person who runs an auto workshop at the keithel area said that no garbage truck has shown up to collect trash after the commencement of the road construction work.
