Cabinet gives nod to recruit 2000 cops

Despite the State's weak financial position, the State Cabinet has given its nod to recruitment of 2000 police Constables in order to meet the insufficient number of policemen in the hill areas of Manipur.
After the Cabinet meeting held at the office chamber of Chief Minister O Ibobi with himself on the chair, Government spokesperson and Education Minister M Okendra informed media persons that although the State's financial condition is weak right now, the recruitment of 2000 Constables is necessitated to increase the number policemen in the hill districts of Manipur.
Police stations in the hill districts are understaffed and ill equipped.
Saying that the salary for the new recruits would be added in the 14th Finance Commission, Okendro said that there are around 5000 vacancies in the Manipur Police Department as the State currently has only around 28000 policemen against the sanctioned number of 33000 policemen.
Police modernisation has featured high on the priority list of the State Government down the years.
Today's meeting also decided to directly purchase land for setting up District Hospitals for Imphal West and Imphal East at Mayang Imphal and Sagolmang respectively.
Rs 35.13 crore each has been earmarked under Special Central Assistance for the said purpose, he added.
The Cabinet also gave its nod to purchase land for the construction of four school buildings under General Nursing Midwifery (GNM) in Ukhrul, Tamenglong, Senapati and Chandel districts.
The State Cabinet also discussed the appointment of a Disability Commissioner for the Social Welfare Department.
