Monkey bites baby to death

Imphal, November 16 2012:
In a bizarre incident, a one and a half month old baby girl was bitten and scratched to death by a domesticated monkey which became wild today.
The shocking incident took place this afternoon at Neikanlong village which falls under Thangmeiband A/C. The victim is said to be the youngest of three children born to Gaidinlung Gangmei (46) and Agana Gangmei (38).Gaidinlung Gangmei is an Administrative Officer at Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited.
Recounting the incident, Gaidinglung Gangmei informed that after administering DPT to the baby at the nearby health centre, his wife was returning home.
As she was trying to console the baby who was crying from pain, the big monkey came out of nowhere and bit the head of the baby vigorously and scratched her face.
Hearing the shout of his wife, locals rushed in but the monkey escaped from the scene.
Later on locals of Neikanlong managed to shot dead the monkey.
The injured baby was immediately rushed to Shija Hospital where she succumbed to
her injuries.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that said monkey was once at the house of MLA Y Irabot.
But after the monkey started acting weird, the MLA gave it away to one of his security guards to be taken away for good.
The security guard in turned gave the monkey to one Nabin Rai of Thangmeiband Neikanlong, who is presently serving as a rifleman in Manipur Rifles.
Nabin Rai had tied the monkey to a tree with the help of an iron chain this morning.
It is believed that the monkey could have bitten the belt tied around its waist and set managed to free itself.
Following the death of the baby, village heads discussed the matter and it was decided that the incident should be taken as a pure case of accident and no FIR should be launched with the police.
Accordingly, the last rite of the baby was performed this evening.
