Awareness drives on ahead of plastic ban from Oct 2

In accordance with the Central Government's decision to ban single use plastics from October 2, the State Government has started launching awareness drives, through the District Administrations and Urban Local Bodies concerned.
The State Government has also instructed the authorities concerned to take up measures to ban import of plastics from Moreh side.
According to an official source, the State Government has directed the District Administration, Tengnoupal, to do the needful to ban import of plastics from Moreh.
Pointing out that plastics imported from Myanmar, through Moreh, have been causing big problems in various areas of the State, the source informed that plastic wastes make up almost 30 percent of the total daily solid waste coming out from Imphal Municipal areas.
The source further explained that the plastics will be collected from both the urban and rural areas within October 2 and then handed over to the Rural Development, Highway Authority and Dalmia Cement to be processed and utilised in road works or cement making.
The source continued that the Urban Local Bodies have launched campaigns to ban plastics in their respective jurisdiction and added that on September 21, Imphal Municipal Corporation will be organising a mass public rally in Imphal.
On the other hand, the source informed that starting today, District Administration Imphal West made it mandatory or the stalls opened at the venue for the musical concert at Phayeng today, to replace most of the plastic items, specially cups, with paper.
Steps have also been taken up to ensure that use of plastic is stopped in the Government offices of the district (Imphal West) as well as any Government events.
Similar measures have been taken up in the villages and localities of the districts, the source added.
