NE Business Summit emphasises on connectivity

At the three day Mega event "Desti-nation North East 2016" that displays strength, potential and initiatives of the North-east region of India, business session on tourism, IT, livelihood, micro finance, start ups, handloom, handicraft and skill development was held by Ministry of DoNER in colla-boration with Indian Chamber of Commerce.
In the two day deliberations, various initiatives and challenges faced by the Ministry of DoNER were presen- ted and discussed.
Moreover various officials, entrepreneurs and delegates also deliberated on the opportunity and scope of improvement.
Among others, the summit recommended that trade and commerce cannot be taken up in full scale without improvement in connectivity of the land locked region, in terms of transport and communication.

On the question of opportunity, the summit felt that the region should take advantage of association like ASEAN.
Recognizing the role and contribution of small scale entre- preneurs, the summit underlined the need for encouraging and promoting such initiatives.
The summit also mentioned that there is a strong need for coordination and support among State Governments.
There is a need for replacing existing policy in terms of commerce and trade that should lead to job creation in the region, said AM Singh, Joint secretary, DoNER at the valedictory function.
He noted that there is a need for physical connection, in terms of air connectivity.
Meanwhile, the Joint Secretary who presented the recommendations stated that banks, both private and public can play an important role in the region, mentioning that there is lack of equity funding and that Public Private Partnerships should be encouraged and promoted.
Tourism sector was one of the key highlights in the summit that can be one of the economic boosts in the region.
The DoNER Secretary also highlighted that Power generation is a major drawback that needed improvement.
The summit also underlined that North East region with its high literacy, has the potential in service sector.
With livelihood being transiting from agriculture, this sector could be promoted with appropriate technology.
DoNER Ministry officials, various public and private sector experts and entrepreneurs from the North East region were part of the business summit discussion panel.
