Imphal, October 13 2012:
After errors were detected in attendance registers, 835 teachers who were recruited by Autonomous District Councils exceeding the number of teachers sanctioned by the State Cabinet, the Government has directed police to take cases against the erring teachers.
Sources informed that ADCs recruited 835 more teachers than the number sanctioned by the State Cabinet in 2006 .
These 835 teachers were given salaries till April 2007 and they were terminated in February 2009 .
Following a petition filed at Court by the additional teachers demanding their emoluments from 2007 to 2009, the Court directed Tribal Development and Hills Department to pay due emoluments to the teachers.
It was reported that the additional teachers owed a total of Rs nine crores to the department for their due emoluments.
Acting on the Court directive, the department maintained that attendance records of the teachers should be verified even if their emoluments should be paid.
Subsequently, the attendance registers were sent to forensic laboratory and examined.
After examination, the forensic laboratory reported that there were many errors in the attendance registers.
Taking serious note of the report, the Chief Minister presided a meeting and, after due deliberation, instructed police to take up cases against the erring teachers.
Meanwhile, it is reported that 35 teachers have been recruited by ADC Senapati and ADC Tamenglong without approval of the Government.
TD and Hills Department came to know about the recruitment only when the teachers filed a petition at Court demanding their salaries.
As the teachers were appointed without approval of the Government, the Government has sought comment of the Law Department so as to terminate the teachers.
