Puya Mei Thaba anniversary observed

International Observation Committee on Puya Mei Thaba (ICOP) observed the 286th anniversary of Puya Mei Thaba (burning of ancient Manipuri scriptures) at THAU ground today.
A joint rally of hill and valley people was taken out from THAU ground to Kangla, where they paid floral tributes to late Maichous, Mainous and elders.
Titular king Leishemba Sanajaoba was also present at the occasion.
Later, they returned to THAU ground and participated in the formal function of Puya Mei Thaba observance.
The gathering observed silence for a few minutes to mourn the burning of ancient scriptures of Manipur.
The function began with Guru Rewben Mashangva and Sarangthem Tharongangbi Leima presenting opening songs.

Chingmi-Tami Nungshi-Lipun Mana was conferred on Suisa Trust chairman Dr Dohorsai Luithui and Maichou Ningshing Mana was received by former Maichou Purel of Royal Palace, Akoijam Nodiyachand's wife Akoijam Momon Leima on behalf of her late husband.
The awards, which are given to those who have contributed their mite in bringing unity among hill and valley people, carry Rs 10,000, a citation and a certificate each.
Speaking at the occasion as chief guest, titular king Leishemba Sanajaoba said that burning of Puyas around 300 years ago was the most unfortunate incident that ever happened in the history of Manipur.
He also wished that such instance does not occur in any place and community of the world again.
People of different communities have been residing in Manipur amicably, Leishemba Sanajaoba said.
Saying that ignorance on origin brings disunity in the State, Leishemba Sanajaoba observed that harmony and unity would be restored only when people start tracing their roots.
The titular king also expressed concern over emergence of two groups which have different opinions on the day of Puya Mei Thaba.
Saying that such difference would give confusion to general public and research scholars, Leishemba Sanajaoba urged the two groups to resolve the difference.
