Imphal, October 12 2015: To provide legal services and assistance to inmates of Manipur Central Jail, Imphal, the Manipur State Legal Services Authority inaugurated the 'Legal Aid Clinic' today at the jail premises.

Judge, High Court of Manipur and Executive Chairman, Manipur State Legal Service Authority Justice N Kotiswar, unveiled the plaque of the 'Legal Aid Clinic' in the presence of Judge, High Court of Manipur and Chairman, High Court Legal Service Committee Justice Kh Nobin, Additional Director General of Police (Prisons) P Doungel and other officials of the jail.

Legal aid is the provision of assistance to people otherwise unable to afford legal representation and access to Court.

Legal aid is regarded as central in providing access to justice by ensuring equality before the law, the right to counsel and the right to a fair trial.

Article 39A of the Constitution of India, provides for equal justice and free legal aid stated Justice Kotiswar in his address to the gathering.

He said that fundamental rights guaranteed by the Indian Constitution of each and every citizen should be safeguarded and for the jail inmates, the Legal Aid Clinic will provide the necessary help.

Justice Nobin said that 'Para Legal Volunteers' will hear the query of jail inmates and provide necessary assistance to safeguard their rights.
