Imphal, December 11 2013: Even as locals of Sekmai today set a truck on fire for quarrying sand from Sekmai river bank, Sekmai Protection Committee (SPC), an umbrella body of 11 local clubs, have announced a ban on organising picnics at Sekmai river banks.

It may be mentioned that SPC and AWS imposed ban on sand quarrys at the banks of Sekmai river with effect from June 1, 2013 .

However, Khwairakpam Chandramani s/o Achou of Awang Sekmai Mayai Leikai allegedly quarried sand in his truck (MN-01-5108) this morning.

Sekmai river bank hit hard

Peeved with the violation of the ban imposed by the two apex bodies, irate locals burnt down the truck at around 8 am.

Speaking to reporters SPC President Angom Rajesh said that sand quarry and organising picnics at the banks of Sekmai river have seriously impacted the natural environment of Sekmai.

While picnics have made the river dirty and polluted, sand quarry is responsible for parching of wells at Sekmai area, he added.

A PIL has already been submitted to the High Court to prohibit sand quarry, Rajesh said and added that the Supreme Court had also made a related ruling on environment protection on August 3 this year.

Although, the State Forest Department has put up signboards not to quarry sand at the catchment areas and banks of Sekmai river, nothing tangible step has been initiated so far to fully impose the ban.
