NPP will fight for repeal of AFSPA: Conrad Sangma

National People's Party (NPP) National president Conrad K Sangma has stated that he and his party will continue to pressure the Central Government to repeal AFSPA from North East India.
Addressing a youth conclave organized by National People's Youth Front (NPYF) at the premises of HVS, Patsoi today, Conrad Sangma who is also the Chief Minister of Meghalaya went on to say that AFSPA is not able to resolve the issue of insurgency in the North East.
Saying that the issue of insurgency in the region can be resolved only through socio-economic measures, the NPP chief cautioned that the situation will only aggravate if force and violent means are employed to suppress insurgency.
"These insurgents are also fellow Indians but AFSPA has made our own people an enemy", Conrad Sangma said.
"Using force as per requirement and in accordance to laws in fighting insurgency is necessary but AFSPA is not the solution," he added.
Claiming that NPP has been pressuring the Centre to remove AFSPA from North East India, he asserted that the same Act had been repealed from Meghalaya after NPP came to power.
The NPP president opined that utilizing the influence of youths in a positive way is imperative for the society and the Nation at large to grow .
Asserting that the majority of total voters in the country are below 45 years, Conrad underscored the need to focus on youths while formulating policies.
"We should focus on what the youths want and take their suggestion into account", the NPP chief said and lauded NPYF for highlighting the issues of Manipur.
He said that every politician and political party must formulate policy and programmes to channelize the power of youths and guide children of all ages.
On the issue of unemployment, Conrad Sangma opined that creating an environment of entrepreneurship in the region is a must.
He added that the North East will progress when the potential of youths are tapped properly.
The function was also attended by NPP National vice president and Deputy Chief Minister Y Joykumar, NPP Manipur State unit president N Kayisii, working president L Jayantakumar.
Leaders of NPYF also attended the programme.
