Imphal, November 09, 2013:
Angry mob today set afire the residence of an accused involved in the killing of a contractor Meghachandra at Lilong Chajing.
Following the arrest of an accused involved in the killing of Meghachandra, who is also the president of a local youth club by the police, it has come to light that the accused has been none other than the brother-in-law of the deceased contractor.
A team of Singjamei police had arrested one Arambam Rogen (48) s/o (L) Ibocha of Lilong Chajing Mairenkhong in connection with the killing of Hawaibam Meghachandra yesterday.
Rogen is wedded to the sister of the deceased Meghachandra.
Confirming his involvement in the killing of Meghachandra, angry mob today dismantled the house of Rogen before setting into flames this morning around 9. Reports culled from the spot said that representatives of the JAC against the killing of Meghachandra have met Dy CM Gaikhangam yesterday.
Not long after the meeting, Rogen was arrested by a team of Singjamei Police.
Major portion of the house including a motorcycle was reduced to cinder when irate mob attacked residence of the accused today.
The source said both Meghachandra and Rogen were engaged in some contract works.
However, a verbal altercation took place between the two on Nov 4. Rogen used a sharp object in attacking his brother-in-law following the verbal duel.
Megha was suspected to have succumbed to the injury.
Rogen was fully wetted when he reached home that day, the source said.
Interestingly, Rogen took part in all the agitation launched by the JAC against the killing of Megha, the source said.
Convinced that the brother-in-law of Rogen was also involved in the killing, the angry mob tried to dismantle his house located at Chajing Karam.
However, the mob was prevented from resorting to destructive act when locals of Chajing Karam reasoned and stopped the mob.
It may be mentioned that the dead body of Hawaibam Meghachandra was found at the bank of Imphal River near Haoreibi Mayai Leikai on Nov 5. Irate locals resorted to staging roadblock at Chajing on Nov 6 followed by a 14-hour Statewide bandh on Nov 7. The dead body was claimed today following an agreement reached between the JAC representatives and the Dy CM.
