Imphal, August 09 2022:
Categorically stating that the biggest problem for the indigenous people of Manipur is the influx of non-local people, the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) and the United Naga Council (UNC) have urged the State Government to take up necessary steps for establishment of a State Population Commission and introduction of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the State.
A joint statement issued by the COCOMI and the NRC pointed out that the Manipur Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a private member resolution moved by MLA Kh Joykisan on establishment of SPC and introduction of NRC in the State on August 5 .
Pointing out that influx of non-local people into the State has created demographic imbalance and many other problems, a memorandum was submitted to the Chief Minister on June 4 urging the State Government to set up a SPC and not to give recognition to unrecognised villages.
Similar memorandums were submitted to the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister on June 10, it said.
The COCOMI and the UNC conveyed gratitude to all the Members of the Manipur Legislative Assembly for unanimously passing the private member resolution on establishment of SPC and introduction of NRC in the State.
As influx of non-local people has become the gravest threat to the indigenous people, it is essential to introduce and update NRC in order to identify illegal immigrants and deal with them in a proper manner, asserted the joint statement.
Checking illegal immigrants from entering Manipur is also of paramount importance, they asserted.
As the State Assembly has adopted a resolution to set up SPC and introduce NRC in the State, the Government must now take up necessary steps in order to translate the resolution into action at the earliest, said the joint statement.
They urged the State Government to persuade the Government of India and obtain its consent for updating the NRC with respect to Manipur.
Both the COCOMI and the UNC are prepared to extend all necessary assistance to pursue the matter speedily.
Pointing out that establishment of SPC is within the State Government's power, they urged the State Government to initiate necessary steps for establishment of SPC at the earliest.
