Imphal, September 08 2022:
Demanding that the Meitei/Meetei be included in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list of the Indian Constitution, the Schedule Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur (STDCM) staged a sit in protest at Tera Keithel today.
The STDCM resumed its movement demanding ST tag for Meitei/Meetei on August 26 after remaining silent for months due to the Covid pandemic and State Assembly elections but the State Government has not given any comment on the issue till date.
For years, the STDCM has been urging the State Government to send the recommendations (ethnography and socio-economic reports of Meitei/Meetei) to the Centre to consider enlisting the ethnic group in the ST list of the Indian Constitution but, so far, there is no report of the Government reviewing the demand.

Today's protest at Tera Keithel was staged along with the volunteers of Ideal Club and women vendors.
Speaking to media persons, convenor of STDCM youth wing N Edison said that the committee is prepared to launch more aggressive modes of agitation in demanding the ST tag for the ethnic group as the Government has taken no notice of their democratic protests.
It is unfortunate that the State Government is not listening to the demand of STDCM being raised to protect the Meetei/Meetei which is living like a minority in its own land, he rued and condemned the Government for not taking the matter seriously.
