Imphal, September 07 2014:
Maintaining that restrictions imposed under CrPC 144 at Ukhrul town would automatically go away once peace returns and adding that there is now violence at Ukhrul district headquarters, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam has categorically stated that it hurts his dignity to engage in mudslinging with UNC or NPF.
Speaking to media persons at the end of an inaugural function of Shri Shri Bijoygovinda Jagamahal (building), Gaikhangam claimed that he has been continuously receiving 'thank you' messages and notes from the people of Ukhrul for promulgating CrPC 144 .
"Even though the Naga People's Front (NPF) accused me of being irresponsible for speaking out the truth, it hurts my dignity to engage in arguments and counter arguments with them", said the Deputy Chief Minister.
"We are serving the people sincerely and we are only discharging the duties assigned to us.
Let them speak to their hearts' content", he added.
After 144 CrPC imposed at Ukhrul town was relaxed for 12 hours yesterday, the restrictions were also relaxed from 6 am to 6 pm today too.
If there is no violence and peace returns in the town, 144 CrPC would be automatically lifted.
The Government has no intention to promulgate 144 CrPC for no reason.
It was invoked to maintain law and order, and protect lives and properties of citizens.
Stating that the Government has been putting in extra efforts to ship essential commodities, Gaikhangam appealed to all shopkeepers, retailers as well as wholesale dealers not to hike prices of essential commodities taking advantage of the highway bandh called by the UNC.
The Government would take up befitting action if any one is found selling goods at inflated prices, Gaikhangam warned.
Stating that he understands difficulties faced by State security forces deployed in Ukhrul district, Gaikhangam maintained that they (security forces) must endure the difficulties in the interest of the people and the State.
The Government has been exercising maximum restraint in the collective interest of the State, he added.
Earlier, the Deputy Chief Minister inaugurated a newly constructed Jagamahal (building) of Shri Shri Bijoygovindaji temple at Sagolband.
The building was donated by Shri Shri Bijoygovindaji Savejet Advisory Board and RK Angangbi Singh and family in memory of late RK (O) Gambhini Shija (Nayani) .
Ex-MLA Dr Kh Loken and Shri Shri Bijoygovinda Advisory Board president RK Manisana were also present at the inaugural function.
Speaking at the inaugural function, Gaikhangam remarked that the Manipuri society at present tends to a chaotic situation and he attributed this disturbing situation to diminishing degree of people's devotion to god.
Peace and peaceful co-existence can be realized if people are devoted to god, Gaikhangam said.
