Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Students' Union (IGNTUSU), Regional Campus, Manipur has demanded the immediate removal and suspension of the Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) of Kangpokpi for allegedly insulting tribal students and assaulting two office bearers of the student body on April 6 .
In a press statement issued by IGNTUSU President K Bowang Kho, the union informed that on April 6 students of the university had gone to visit IGNTU main campus site in connection with the ongoing agitation under the banner "Save IGNTU-RCM".
When the students reached the spot, the Additional SP who came in "civil dress" physically assaulted the IGNTUSU Finance Secretary and the Information & Publicity Secretary "without any valid reason", alleged the student body.
IGNTUSU said the SP even "insulted" the entire tribal student community and even remarked that he would solve "everything" for the students.
While taking strong exception to the behaviour of the Additional SP, IGNTUSU stressed on the need to have honest and "gentlemen" officers in the police department.
The union wanted to know what will happen to the State if such "communal law enforcement officer" is put on duty to handle situations.
IGNTUSU has also demanded the removal of University Vice Chancellor and held him responsible for the current situation.
The union members have asserted that they will boycott classes and halt all activities in the campus including the first phase construction related works if their demands are not met.
It may be mentioned that IGNTUSU had been demanding the appointment of a full-time director of IGNTUSU-RCM and implementation of the university reservation norms.
