Imphal, November 06 2012:
Showing solidarity on anti-AFSPA crusader Irom Chanu sharmila completing 12 years of hunger strike against continued imposition of the controversial Act, members and supporters of Extra Judicial Execution Victim Families' Association, Manipur (EEVFAM) today staged a sit-in-protest at Porompat today.
Speaking to newspersons on the sidelines of the day-long demonstration, EEVFAM president Renu vehemently condemned indifferent attitude of the Government to the masses' demand for scrapping the draconian Armed Forces' special Powers Act 1958 from Manipur.
Hailing Sharmila's relentless and courageous campaign for the sake of human kind and urging the citizens to continuously support Sharmila's cause, Renu expressed that under the pretext of counter-insurgency operation many innocent civilians have been randomly picked up and slaughtered by security forces.
Decrying extra-judicial killings at the hands of security forces under the immunity granted by AFSPA 1958, she said even the guilty ones deserve a fair trial in the court of law.
While Sharmila launched the democratic form of agitation 12 years back unable to bear atrocities committed by security forces against innocent civilians, EEVFAM on August 31 this year apprised the Supreme Court of India on the number of extra-judicial executions in the Manipur, the president informed.
Even as the apex court was about to hear the case earlier this month, the decree had to be deferred following a plea by the Government of Manipur's counsel, said Renu who exuded confidence that justice will ultimately prevail, even if delayed.
