Three suspected militants were gunned down by the police in two separate incidents under Lamlai police station in Imphal East today.
The police claimed to have recovered one weapon after the encounters.
Police said a team of police commandos shot dead two persons suspected to be militants in an encounter at Laikoiching, about 8 kms south east of Lamlai police station.
The police team recovered one nine mm pistol after the encounter, which took place at about 1.30 pm.
The same police commando team had another exchange of fire with suspected militants at Itham Moirangpurel Awang Leikai, 20 kms north of Lamlai police station at 2.45 pm today.
One suspected UG was gunned down in the encounter, police said.
On getting information of the encounters police reinforcement was rushed led by IG (law and order) Baral and DIG Range-1 LM Khaute.
A search operation was launched till late in the evening at the surrounding areas, police said.
All the three dead bodies are yet to be identified.
Police have recovered the bodies and deposited at the RIMS morgue.
Meanwhile police and Manipur Rifles arrested five UGs from Imphal and Tamenglong since yesterday.
Police said two UNLF activists were arrested by the police from Yaiskul Police Land while conducting a search operation at the area.
They are identified as Laishram Chaoba (24) of Yaiskul Police Land and Ningthoujam Kunjabihari alias Lalhaba (24) of Phayeng Sabal leikai, police said.
Manipur Rifles personnel guarding Tamenglong Treasury office reportedly arrested three NSCN (K) members yesterday and handed over them to the police.
One nine mm pistol was recovered from them.
The MR personnel fired shots in their attempt to arrest them.
