Imphal, June 05 2022: Chief Minister N Biren Singh has stated that the State Government is targeting to plant 75 lakh saplings across Manipur by August this year as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

He also informed that a total of Rs 300 crore had been allocated to conserve water bodies at Lamphelpat.

The Chief Minister said this during a World Environment Day observance at Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) site, Heirangoithong Maibam Leikai, today.

The State level function was organized by the Directorate of Environment & Climate Change under the theme "Only One Earth" .

N Biren stressed on the need to entrust each college in the State with the task of carrying out tree plantation drive at one hill each, located in the valley areas in order to achieve the target of planting 75 lakh saplings.

The Chief Minister continued that tree saplings for the plantation drive would be provided by Horticulture and Forest Department while the expenses will be borne by Forest Department.

He also sought support and involvement of all sections of people, local clubs and different riders' groups to mitigate climate change.

N Biren informed that tree plantation had been carried out at around 300 hectares of land under the Green Manipur Mission so far and the same is still going on.

Speaking about the Sewage Treatment Plant, the Chief Minister stated that household wastes from 73 drains along the Nambul River are being brought to the treatment plant through pipelines and the treated water would be used to irrigate adjacent agricultural land measuring 43 hectares.

He further informed that works to rejuvenate other rivers would also be started shortly and urged the public not to dump waste into rivers and water bodies.

"Throw the waste in a dustbin so that the same could be collected by authorities concerned," he added.

Lastly, he appealed to all the people to extend support to make green Manipur a reality.

Forest and Environment Minister Th Biswajit, while delivering his speech, expressed happiness on seeing many women taking part in the World Environment Day observation.

He informed that the Forest and Environment Department is taking up steps to revive around 1,384 spring sources and conserve around 1,591 water bodies in the State.

He also spoke about the plan to rejuvenate major polluted rivers of the State and continued that the Government has made a plan to set up a Sewage Treatment Plant at Porompat for treatment of waste generated from Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences.

Expressing concern over global warming, Biswajit urged the public to start planting trees and conserve nature.

Langthabal AC MLA Karam Shyam, Chief Secretary Dr Rajesh Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary MH Khan, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest AK Joshi, Vice Chancellor of Dhanamanjuri University Prof N Rajmuhon Singh, Director of Environment & Climate Change Dr Y Nabachandra Singh, officials of Environment Department and members of Royal Riders Manipur also attended the programme, among others.

As a part of the programme, the Chief Minister led the other dignitaries in planting tree sapling at the STP site.

World Environment Day stickers, T-shirts and caps were also released.

Brand Ambassador of CM's Green Manipur Mission Valentina Elangbam was also felicitated during the programme.

Later, N Biren flagged off a motorcycle rally to spread awareness on World Environment Day.
