Imphal, July 03 2011:
A large portion of NH-39 has sunk between Maram Bazar and Maram Centre beneath the 5 Assam Rifles camp.
For the past four days, mudslide has continually has taken away the periphery wall and consequent landslide is threatening to wash away major chunks of the highway, informed a press release issued by Maram Students' Union (MKS).
In the last 24 hours, at least five feet of the highway has disappeared and cracks have developed at the adjoining area.
The sunken portion of the highway is 100 metres from the spot of last year's landslide which led to sinking of the highway for a length of 100 feet.
With the monsoon not likely to get over any time soon, the threat of the damaged portion is getting worse and now only a narrow strip joins the highway at two portions.
As such, people are apprehensive that the highway would be disconnected at these points sooner rather than later, said the students' body.

Despite the gravity of the situation, no one is paying any attention although vehicles are plying along the highway in most difficult conditions.
Sometimes the vehicles are stranded and at other times the vehicles break down due to debris deposited by mudslides.
Failure on the part of the implementing agency to execute maintenance work in time is the major factor for the deplorable condition of the highway.
It also expressed deep apprehension that further sinking and landslides would disconnect the highway if adequate measures are not taken up immediately.
Meanwhile, the MKS has condoled the untimely demise of Kemdina Agatha, a student of D' Regina English High School and daughter of Hingba John.
