Anti-dam cycle rally at Tangjeng

As a part of anti-Tipaimukh dam agitation, a cycle rally was taken out today at Tangjeng Khunou in Thoubal district under the aegis of Women Development Association, Tangjeng.
Registering their strong stand against the construction of mega Tipaimukh Dam, the protesters demanded the construction of smaller dams and revocation of the MoU signed between the Govt of Manipur and NHPC.
It may be mentioned that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed by the Government of Manipur with two agencies, National Hydro-electric Power Corporation (NHPC) Limited and Satluj Jal Nigam Limited for the construction of Tipaimukh Dam in Manipur-Mizoram border.
The rallyists today aired that the MoU was not signed with the consent of the people and it could not be final.
The protesters conveyed their apprehension that once the dam is constructed it would destroy 25,822,22 hectares of forest area, 322 square kilometre of Manipur's land would be inundated.

These apart the construction would cause displacement of around 67 villagers around the Tipaimukh Dam.
1461 families, mostly of the Zeliangrong and Hmar communities inhabiting in Tamenglong and Parbung subdivision of Churachandpur, would be affected.
Slogans like 'We are against Tipaimukh Dam,' 'Save the lives of remote areas,' 'Go back NHPC,' 'We don't want big dams' 'Big dams kill,' 'Save forest, save people,' 'We want forest, not dam,' etc were raised during the rally.
