Bishnupur, October 29 2024:
The JAC against the inhumane torture of Md Basir Ahmad and Salauddin at Phubala on October 28 has urged the State Government to book the perpetrators behind the attack and dole out appropriate punishment by November 2, failing which, intense agitations will be initiated from the next day onwards.
JAC convenor BM Iliyas Khan has informed that Meitei Pangal drivers have launched a "steering down" protest in response to the incident.
The duo were allegedly brutally assaulted by unidentified miscreants at Phubala yesterday night.
Notably, the JAC was formed today during a public meeting held at Kwakta Sevla Mina Bazar under Kwakta Gram Panchayat in Moirang AC.
The meeting was attended by Kwakta CSOs, Meitei Pangal drivers and religious leaders of Kwakta along with the public.
Basir Ahmad (36), s/o Md Alaoddin from Kwakta Sevla Mina Bazar, one of the two injured in yesterday's physical assault, spoke to media persons and said that the incident happened as they were on their way home after unloading his goods truck at Imphal.
When they reached Phubala Awang Leikai along the Tiddim Road at 9:30 pm, their path was blocked by a black i20 car which parked in front of their vehicle.
He maintained that he noticed the i20 car trailing behind them from Ningthoukhong.
After stopping the duo, the unidentified miscreants questioned where they hailed from.
Once Basir answered that they were from Kwakta, one of the miscreants who was allegedly armed with a gun, dragged him out of the vehicle and proceeded to beat up the duo.
The occupants of the car thrashed the truck driver and handyman without giving them any explanation, claimed Basir.
Fortunately, meira paibis of the area intervened and raised questions about the identity of the miscreants.
They also reportedly attempted to take pictures/video.
At this juncture, the unknown individuals got in their car and drove off towards Imphal, he maintained.
Stating that a large portion of his body was injured in the assault, Basir said that he might be dead if the womenfolk had not come to his rescue.
Thus, he strongly condemned the brutal assault upon himself and his handyman for no legitimate reason.
Additionally, BM Iliyas Khan informed the mediapersons that the meeting had resolved to demand i) immediate cessation of illegal taxation/extortion along the Tiddim Road by certain groups and ii) deployment of adequate security forces along the stretch of Tiddim Road from Kwakta to Imphal.
He added that their demands will be communicated to the Chief Minister, Moirang MLA, DC Bishnupur, SP Bishnupur, DIG and Security Advisor.
Today's public meeting and press briefing was attended by representatives of AKYVO.
AMPYA, AKCC, ANJUMAN, MPUVOK and AKADU .
