Tamenglong, September 29 2021:
The All Tousem Students' Union (ATSU) has condemned the abduction and brutal killing of Athuan Abonmai, former President and advisor of Zeliangrong Baudi on September 22, 2021 .
A release issued by ATSU informed that Late Athuan Abonmai was abducted as he came to attend the inauguration of various developmental projects taken up at Tamenglong district.
The program was also attended by the Chief Minister of Manipur, N Biren Singh who also holds the home portfolio along with his fellow ministers and many high-ranking officials.
It stated that Athuan Abonmai was abducted in broad daylight within a tight security zone.
For this very reason, the Chief Minister has apologized to the public for the security lapses.
The student body appreciated the Chief Minister for his swift action by arresting two suspects alleged to be involved in gruesome murder of Athuan Abonmai and also for assuring all possible help to the bereaved family.
It also appealed to the CM to fulfil his promises of help to the victim's family and to extend every possible help to bring justice at the earliest.
"The Government has suspended security personnel (16 in number) so far for dereliction of their assigned duty.
However, we see no reason and justification for demanding suspension of DC and SP Tamenglong by JAC and some CSOs since both were present along with the CM and his cabinets at the inauguration of Oxygen Plant at District Hospital which is about 15 km far away from the incident of abduction", it added.
The student body also mentioned that the district police and district administration Tamenglong were reportedly not given prior information about Athuan Abonmai attending the said programme when the threat matrix to his life was already there from before.
"However, if the Government give in to the arbitrary demand without strong justifications for ground of suspension of both DC and SP, Tamenglong by JAC and some CSOs, we ATSU in collaboration with various student organisations of Tamenglong and Noney Districts will take up strong democratic form of agitation and any untoward incident/consequences will not be held responsible by ATSU", it concluded.
