Bomb attack at M-Sector

Imphal, September 25 2012: IN YET another bomb attack carried out by armed underground activists on security personnel in the state, a powerful bomb exploded inside the high security 'M-Sector', a military complex housing the offices of PRO (Assam Rifles, PIB Defence Wing in the heart of Imphal close to Raj Bhawan early this morning.

However, there is no report of any human casualty in the attack apart from causing damages to the window panes of the office of PIB Defence Wing.

The proscribed Revolutionary People's Front (RPF) has claimed that the bomb attack was carried out by its armed wing, PLA.

The blast occurred at around 5:40 am today.

Believe to have been hurled from outside, the bomb landed near the Canteen of M-Sector and exploded under a big Banyan tree growing inside the military complex.

Although no one was hurt in the explosion, the window panes of the office of PRO, Defence Wing and the nearby trees including the banyan tree suffered the impact.

The location of M-Sector is sandwiched between Raj Bhawan and Treasury office complexes on the south, Johnstone Higher Secondary School on the north, Manipur Fire Sevice on the west and the main Kanglpat road on the eastern side.

Within minutes of the blast in M-Sector complex, another bomb suspected to be an IED planted along the roadside went off at Kwairakpam Lamkhai under Imphal West district, just a few kilometers away from Kwakeithel Police Outpost.

The road along which the IED was found planted also leads 6/8 Gorkha Regiment stationed nearby, but within Bishnupur district.

No one was hurt in the incident.

Soon after the report of the bomb blast reached the police, a team of Bishnupur police rushed in to the spot and inspected the site.

Police also recovered bomb splinters from the area.

Police suspects the bomb to be an IED.

In another incident, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was found planted along NH 37 (Imphal-Jiribam) road at Moidangpok Aheibam Leikai near Cine School under Patsoi Police Station in Imphal West district early this morning.

The bomb was detected by personnel of 9 Sector AR stationed at Keithelmanbi while they were on their ROP duty at around 5:30 am today.

The bomb was later retrieved by bomb experts of Manipur Police and detonated it at a safe place at around 7:30 am.

A bomb was also found planted at the gate of one Pungsubam Bimola, who is the member of Kontha Zilla Parishad last night.

The police have retrieved the bomb and a case registered in the regard.

The reason behind planting of the bomb is still not known.
